I want this gift…

If I could ask God to give me a specific gift it would be the gift of encouragement. I would ask Him to create in me an ability to encourage those around me; I would ask for the ability to see people as He sees them; I would ask for the gift of loving people the way He loves me. You see we live in a world that is full of reasons to bring us down. In between all that, we as people also have a tendency to see the worst in situations and people and hammer it away. (more…)

Fishing from the sewage

A couple of weeks ago, there was an uproar over a poster used by a local church to incentivize the youth to attend its services and learn from God on various aspects of their sexuality. This uproar got a group of friends of mine talking about how our society seems to have become numb to the lost. We seem not to have a heart for the lost, almost like the lost are the lost; we are the good ones so their loss does not affect us. One of the people in this discussion said something profound that has been in my head since, that if we are not surrounded by the lost, if we do not have around us people who we know desperately need the Lord, then we will also lose our heart for the lost.

Rough edges and all….

Ever been to an alcoholic anonymous (AA) class? No, well neither have I. However, I have watched enough movies to love these classes. My favorite moment is when the drug addicts introduce themselves; I find the confession of being an addict so powerful. So this week I start there. My name is Esther and I serve in Mavuno church. That statement does not ordinarily sound like an AA statement but with the week we have had as a church, I know this statement is very similar to an AA intro. (more…)

Lineage of Grace

One of my all-time favorite authors is Francine Rivers, I love the way she takes scripture and converts into such relatable fiction stories. Her book, Redeeming Love, introduced me to the world of reading fiction and I have never looked back. To date my library has a good selection of fiction books, some that I could read and reread and never tire of. Yet as if one book was not enough, a couple of years ago another of her books sneaked into my all-time favorite books list, Lineage of Grace. (more…)
